What You Need To Know About The Chinese Astrology Calendar
Both the solar and the lunar calendar are part of the Chinese astrology calendar. While it may seem that this calendar is only used in China this is not true. There are many Asian cultures that use this calendar for a number of things. It should be noted that the Gregorian calendar is the one that people use for everyday activities. The Chinese one is usually reserved for special occasions.
The Chinese astrology calendar is called by many different names. One of the names is the Xia calendar which comes from the fact that the year began on the second new moon during the Xia dynasty. The calendar is also called the Yin calendar which makes reference to the lunar elements that make it up.
The calendars workings are controlled by a set of rules that have been used in the calendar since 104 BCE. All of the months in the year will be lunar months according to these rules. This means that each month will start on what is called a dark moon. Each year will also be comprised of 12 months. However there is an intercalary month that comes every two or three years. One of the other rules is that the sun must pass the winter solstice in the 11th month of the year.
This calendar also works in a complete cycle of 60 years comprised of five 12 year cycles. Each year is named after a different animal. These animals will correspond with the Chinese zodiac. The legend behind these names states that when Lord Buddha left the Earth he called all the animals together to say good bye to him. The 12 animals of the zodiac were the only ones that came and as a reward a year was named after them. The order of the years is the order that the appeared in the legend.
The two cycles that make up the 60 year cycle actually work together in their interpretations. It should be noted that the first cycle is known as the one of the 10 heavenly stems. These heavenly stems are the 5 elements of fire, wood, earth, water and metal in their yin and yang forms.
The second cycle is the zodiac cycle. This is made up of the 12 animals of the zodiac which are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and boar. It should be noted that in Vietnam the cat replaces the rabbit.
The 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac are only a part of what makes the Chinese astrology calendar. There is a complex weaving of many other elements as well.
