Tri-state used car dealers urge customers to winter-proof cars before bad weather strikes
It’s not too late to get your vehicle prepared for the cold weather. Many of us have been spared with above-average temperatures into November, so we’re not thinking cold and snow yet. Yet.
Where I live in the Midwest, our mantra is “if you don’t like the weather, wait a minute”. You never know when those cold winds will turn your way, so be ready by following these tips from your dealer.
Your Tri-state used car dealer wants to be sure you’ve done everything possible to help your car run efficiently when cold weather does arrive. Start with the cooling system. If you don’t have the tools to check your anti-freeze/water ratio, have your dealer’s service department check it for you. You can buy a simple tool or testing strips, but get it done.
The fuel system also needs some attention. Some gas line anti-freeze in the system is essential to keeping your fuel system from freezing due to moisture in the lines. Check to be sure your gas cap is air-tight as well, since fuel can be lost or water can enter through a crack in the cap. Newark used car customers can always ask their dealer’s service department to check any issues with the vehicle that they are unsure of.
Unless you live in the great white north or commute in a rural area, you may not think about r need snow tires. But do you consider tire pressure? Proper tire inflation is essential all year long for maximum fuel economy, but in the winter an over-inflated or deflated tire can cause loss of traction. Not something desirable on snowy or icy roads.
Protect the exterior of your car by washing and waxing it before bad weather hits. Keep it in the garage or under cover if possible. Waxing aluminum wheels also can protect them from getting dull and pitted. Wash also road salt off whenever the weather warms enough throughout the winter. After preparing your car to face the bad weather, make sure you are prepared. Keep an emergency kit in the car. You should already have a first aid kit and an ice scraper, but add some sand or cat litter for traction in case you get stuck. A blanket or two, candles and matches and some water and energy bars are good to keep on hand in case you really get stranded. Remember, don’t leave your car if you become lost or stranded in bad weather- wait for help to come.
