Chanting Traditions Of The World
There are many traditions, cultures and religions that use the practice of chanting to reach specific objectives in a spiritual sense.
To chant is to work with the voice to use a repeated syllable, phrase, song or word. It can be a word, phrase or sound with a meaning or without a meaning. Sometimes it will even sound like singing. The use of the voice creates vibrations. This is where the power of chanting is said to derive.
Chanting is not only confined to the Indian and Hindu traditions as is commonly thought. However chanting is used in many of the Indian traditions in many different ways. Here chanting is found in the Yogic, Tantric and Vedic traditions to name a few.
In the Buddhist traditions of Nepal, India and Tibet chanting is used. Here it is used as a form of meditation by the Buddhist monks and other Buddhist practitioners.
The Shamanic traditions also work with chanting, such as in Japan for example. In order for the Shaman to access other planes of reality, the element of sound is important. In the rituals of the Shaman the sound produced by chanting is an important element.
Chanting was used also in the traditions of the Asian Shamans to heal and return health through the releasing of negative spirits from those who were ill. In certain countries such as Korea this still occurs.
There are other Shamanic traditions that also work with chanting such as the Australian Aborigines and Native Indians of America.
In the Eastern Asian countries there is a type of chanting that is found which is called overtone chanting which can be found in Tuva and Mongolia. The technique of Hoomii or overtone throught singing is used by the Shamans in Tuva.
In Indonesia chanting is used for example in the Kecak tradition. Kecak is also called, “ketjak”, or “cak”, or the “monkey chant”. Kecak was originally of ritualistic origins but today is used more for performance art.
So chanting can be found throughout many countries and traditions around the globe and these are just a few examples.
