It’s The Little Things That Count
Different people have different ways of relaxing. Some people get all the need from sitting down with a good book. Some people find a class of good wine does the trick. Other though, require more active relaxation. Like some kind of physical activity or sport. Jogging is affirmed favorite especially with many business executives. Another favorite is tennis, or squash, or the ever popular game of golf.
But you don’t have to buy special equipment and clothes, or indeed leave your home, in order to de-stress. My grandmother got all the relaxation she could want from cooking. Though it was not just as simple as that. She told me that the two most important means of relieving stress for her where two knife sets she kept on her counter top. Whenever she was preparing one of her excellent meals, there would be the appropriate knife for the current job, either on her left or on her right.
As a child I had not the slightest idea what she was talking about. Now as an adult, especially one with nearly as much interest in culinary matters as she, I fully understand her fixation with knives. I especially understand that she being a constant cook, she was constantly cutting. And having the right knife in size and shape and particularly sharpness, is mandatory.
Knives were not her sole means of relaxing. She had another addiction too. But it was an addiction that was very positive and a great benefit to me and everyone else in the household. That addiction was two cookbooks she had a mini library at one end of her kitchen. On the shelves where books about every conceivable type of cooking from every part of the world. Not only that, but they spanned a huge era. They included very old cookbooks that she could well have inherited from her mother. A veritable treasure chest of culinary secrets.
Every day she tried out new recipes. Of course this was greatly appreciated by all the other members of the family who happen to be in the house. She once told me that a knife set and a cookbook where heavenly creations. Again, when I was a kid, I had no idea what she was talking about.
Only years later when I became interested in culinary matters myself, did I appreciate what she was getting at. I am not as dedicated to, or maybe the word is fixated with knives. I do agree that having the right one at hand when you are preparing a complicated meal is pretty important. But I am not as driven by that subject as she was.
But I have a confession to make. I am not without my own little kitchen obsessions. One in particular. That obsession is my countertop microwave. I honestly don’t believe I would function properly in my kitchen without this device. Of course, I don’t use it for my haute cuisine cooking. For that, I use my fabulous Induction hob. No, my microwave is not really for serious cooking but for de-stressing. In other words I use it to prepare instant food for myself when I’m on my own. Crucially I’ve got into the habit now of making my coffee and tea with it too.
