History And Symbolism Behind Marriage Jewelry

Jewelry has been used to woo and proclaim love for millennia. It forms an important part of the wedding vows and it acts as a symbol for people that you are married and off the market so to speak. There is a long history and a great deal of symbolism that is associated with the various types of jewelry that is given and worn throughout marriage.

Wedding rings were used by the Romans to show that a woman was married, but they may have been used long before that too. They may have been made out of leather or plants, however, the Romans and Greeks began using metals, which were much longer lasting to mark the marriage of a woman to a man. It was not until around World War II that the tradition of men wearing wedding rings really began. The circle of the wedding ring symbolizes eternal love and it has traditionally been worn on the ring finger of the left hand as there is a vein called the ‘vena amoris’ that runs from there to the heart.

In the ninth century engagement rings began to become popular following a decree from Pope Nicolas I. He demanded that men should provide their betrothed with a ring of gold in order to show their financial capacity to look after their wives once they were married.

Placing gems into engagement rings did not become customary until later on. The first diamond engagement ring was given to Mary of Burgundy in 1477 and it has been much lusted for ever since.

Since the 19th century when there were more diamond deposits found around the world and they became more available, solitaire engagement rings have been top of the list of many women’s list of dream rings. The diamond began as an inclusion in the engagement ring as a symbol of the purity of love and fidelity.

Today there are many different designs, settings and cuts that are used in engagement rings. There are still a number of traditional diamond rings that are given, but champagne and pink diamonds are also becoming more common. Other cuts such as princess cut engagement rings are also becoming popular.

Another piece of jewelry that is commonly given is the eternity ring, which has a more than 4000 year history that was started by the Egyptians. In the past the rings often represented a serpent with their tale in their mouth to show eternity. These days a row of smaller gemstones that compliment the engagement ring are more commonly given on anniversaries.
