Brief History of Egyptian Jewellery
The earliest Egyptians were tremendous pioneers in the making of the Egyptian jewellery. They love Egyptian decorations. Egyptians made jewellery with having full respect of the Egyptian art and used the different crafted designs carefully. Fine jewellery in Egypt was not only a quantitative measure for beauty but in ancient times it was also considered that this jewellery provides spiritual and magical protection. Different minerals and metals had different recognition and relation with different gods. Also this jewellery was identified for spiritual and healthful values. In ancient times this jewellery played different roles. From the very beginning, the man had natural attraction towards the beautiful things. This jewellery had religious and supernatural importance in the Egyptian culture and was considered as a protection from darks.
Egyptians start making jewellery with naïve natural materials like shell, plant branches, bones, etc during the ancient periods of Nagada and Badari. These materials were placed in the threads of plants like flax and the hairs of cow. To make bit precious these stones and to give an Egyptian look they started to paint them with colored glass substances. From the period of first dynasty, Egyptians were much experienced in making the gold and silver Egyptian styled jewellery with different precious and semi precious gems. The art of making Egyptian gold and silver jewellery reached to its peak in the Middle East kingdom. At that time Egyptians mastered the methods, techniques and rules which were used to make authentic ancient Egyptian styled jewellery.
Vest was the unique piece in the history of jewellery which never came out in the other cultures except the Egyptian culture. Vest was used to wear around the chest. It was generally crafted with gold or with the gold plated metal. If it is made with other cheap materials even then it was painted yellow for giving golden effects. In Egypt, still it is used in the present folktale practices. And it is still dreamed by the Egyptian girls to show off.
Another piece of Egyptian jewellery is known as Egyptian cartouche. It was only worn by the kings and pharaohs of ancient Egypt. The pharaohs were conceived as living gods and their cartouches were believed as their official signs. The name of first pharaoh was written in the “Magical oval’ with which he was protected from evils in his life and after the death, as well, in his tomb.
In the past 5000 thousand years this cartouche has gained popularity as a symbol of long life, good fortune and protector which protects from evils. This pendent is available in Egypt. Buyers can engrave the spells of their names on the cartouche just like the king Tut did during his life.
