Is the story of Aurther and the sword of the stone real?
If so is this the same King Aurthur as Aurthur from Camelot and the knights of the round table?
The Arthurian myth has been reinvented and added to many times over the past 1500 years.
Its not even known if a real Arthur existed. The legend probably had origins in a warlord who led British resistance to an early attempt by the Angles and Saxons to extend their territories into Eastern England sometime in the fifth century. All that is that can be said is that the British possibly led by a leader called Arthur (or several leaders, Arthur amongst them) – fought a series of battles and finally defeated the Saxons at a place called Mons Badon. The whereabouts of which is still unknown.
It was a short lived victory – a generation or two later the Saxons decisively returned. By that time the old leaders had passed away and the legend possibly grew from tales of his past victories to boost moral along with promises that he would one day return…
The Saxons – having later succeeded in invading and colonising – adapted the Romano-British tales of Arthur into their own mythology. It probably was away of bringing the two peoples together by acknowledging the heroes on both sides; and the only entertainment at the time was storytelling.
The Welsh also included Arthur into their legends – they held out against Saxon conquest. The figure of Merlin is probably based on a Welsh bard (story teller, musician & possibly a healer).
The legend really took shape – with the addition of Lancelot and Guinevere and the quest for the holy grail in particular – in post Norman medieval times. The times of knights, jousts etc. The legend was embellished to include examples of good knightly behaviour, platonic love of a knight for his queen etc. and became hugely popular across the castles and courts of Europe.
The legend was further re-invented in the 19th century by a group of poets and painters called pre-Raphaelites who were into romantic fantasy in a big way.
Since then there have been countless books and trilogies, each retelling and reinterpreting the stories in their own way.
Was he real? No-one knows for sure, it probably will remain a fiercely argued question.
But the stories that have been invented, embellished and told and retold are great.
The stories that make up Arthurian mythology are Britain’s equivalent to the Greek myths.
