Beach Prospecting For Treasures And Trinkets
Prospecting for treasures at the beach, or beachcombing, is a fun activity and can also be a very rewarding one financially. Whether you live near the coast, or just visit one occasionally when on holiday, you may enjoy the thrill of discovering some unique and fascinating objects just lying around in the sand. If nothing else, the process involves getting some good exercise and the healthiness of being outdoors.
There are a couple of thing you can do to enhance your chances of finding a good amount of treasure. You will want to refer to the tide tables to determine when the low tide will occur where you are going. This will give you maximum search area and increase your probability of finding collectible objects. Also, try to go somewhere less frequented by crowds, some of whom will be your competition in treasure-hunting. Do not, however, jeopardize your well-being by going to a very remote area by yourself. Always take a friend along for company and safety.
Do be sure to have some basic supplies with you to make the trip easier and more fun. Some plastic bags or rigid containers will be necessary to carry whatever items of interest you may find. If you prefer to have your hands protected from wet sand and whatever else you touch, some latex, vinyl or other waterproof gloves will be necessary. Because you will be trekking a lot of sand back to your vehicle, having a cordless handheld vacuum available will avoid grittiness on seats and floor mats. You will want to have towels as well as water or other drinks, and protection from the sun in the form of sunscreen or a hat. And if you wish to make the investment, a metal detector can be handy for finding coins and jewelry buried under the sand’s surface.
If you are lucky in your prospecting, you may find some beach glass. This is much sought after by collectors and also by jewelry makers, who fashion it into unique pieces such as pendants and rings. Beach glass is bits of broken bottles or other objects that have been worn smooth by being tumbled around in the ocean for long periods. This, as well as contact with sand and other materials, produces a frosted look and texture.
Something else to be on the lookout for when beachcombing is jewelry of all sorts. Sometimes people surfing or swimming may lose items they are wearing in the waves. It is not uncommon to find ladies’ watches or men’s watches, rings, bracelets and earrings washed ashore. If these become buried beneath the sand, a metal detector may be helpful in finding them, but often also they will be in plain sight.
Having returned home with an array of treasures and oddities, you now need a place to spread them out for a closer look and probably some cleaning and polishing in some cases. Either a workbench in your garage, if you have one, or something with multiples shelves and cubbyholes, such as a computer workstation desk that is not being used. This will let you organize your collection as well as cleaning tools and supplies.
Having found a good place to work, the task of cleaning and polishing is at hand. Some research will tell you which cleaners, solvents or polishes will be needed for the types of objects you are working with. Soft cloths, such as old tee shirts, and brushes from perhaps a makeup set, are both good for this purpose. Having shined up your findings, with some research you may also discover that you have something quite valuable in your possession. Or, it may only be a pretty trinket to be admired. Either way, you have had a most enjoyable time finding it.
