Debi Pearl’s Listen To My Dream – A Review

Listen To My Dream is an elementary level story of the life and influence of Martin Luther King, Jr, published in December of 2009. It is published by Pearl Books, LLC.

The book begins with King as a boy and ends shortly after his murder in 1968. It opens with King asking his mother why he was black and wasn’t treated like others. Later in school his teacher told him to hold his head high and dream big. He decided that was just what he would do.

Since he was ‘colored’ as Negroes were called at that time, he and his people in the south did not have the freedoms the white people did. Finally Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white person and was arrested; this led to King starting an effective boycott of the Montgomery, Alabama bus system until they stopped treating Negroes as lesser citizens. Eventually in 1956 the Supreme Court ruled that such discrimination was against the law.

The children’s part of the book is written as a poem, emphasizing the importance of setting goals and sticking to them. It ends after King’s funeral following his murder on April 4, 1968.

Debi Pearl’s book Listen To My Dream is written in two parts. As was stated, the first part is written to emphasize King’s life as related to eliminating racial inequality. The second part, written as a narrative, relates more detail about the civil rights movement itself and how King’s work influenced the laws.

Debi and Michael Pearl drew all the illustrations for the first part of the book. At times the poem only hints at something and then, a detail is given on the picture. For example, the poem hinted at an influence for dreaming big but the note stated that encouragement came from his elementary teacher Miss Lemon.
