Accomplishing Your Nursing Degree Is Easier Than Ever

Colleges and universities throughout the country say their goodbyes to 2010, announcing new nursing degree programs and current ones that are newly accredited. Students have a variety of options when it comes to choosing institutions that offer these nursing degrees and the educational levels at which the degrees are offered. That’s because these new nursing degree programs are being made available as part of online degree programs and community college partnerships with four-year institutions, colleges and universities recognized for serving minorities and more. Take advantage of the information about this field online and you should also take this opportunity to look into Education Connection Online to know your options.

A college in upstate New York, for one, announced on Dec. 21, that the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education had provided its bachelor’s degrees in nursing a five-year accreditation. The college offers students a choice of campus and online degree programs in nursing. Where the campus-based nursing degree program emphasizes clinical study, the online degree program is an RN to BS (registered nurse to bachelor of science) program intended for students who have already obtained an associate’s degree, the college announcement noted.

Anticipated needs in nursing extend beyond what we think of as registered nurses. According to reports, they include needs in primary care and for nurse educators. When it comes to the basics of registered nursing, however, there are states such as New York that are considering requiring registered nurses to obtain bachelor’s degrees, the Upstate New York college announcement noted. Reading about online master will prepare you and ease the transition into college.

In New Jersey, an article in the Brick Patch reported that a partnership between a community college and a four-year institution is being emulated and reviewed by other colleges and universities. As part of the partnership, students in the two-year community college program have an opportunity to obtain as many as 88 transfer credits and work toward a bachelor’s degree from a four-year university at the community college campus, the Brick Patch article suggested.

The bachelor’s degree requirement might be under consideration by some states. But reports suggest that by 2015, nurses in advanced practice specialties are expected to be required to have a doctoral degree at minimum. Two institutions – one on the east coast, the other on the west coast – in December announced new degrees at this level.

According to a report on WABI-TV5, a university in Maine is expected to launched one of these doctoral degree programs next year. The other nursing degree program at the doctoral level is expected to be launched by an Oakland, Cal., institution in January, according to the San Francisco Business Times. The latter nursing degree program could help registered nurses advance in their fields to become advance practice nurses, nurse administrators or nurse educators, the San Francisco Business Times suggested.

Men and minorities have traditionally been underrepresented in the field of nursing. Navajo Technical College in December announced and celebrated a new registered nursing degree program that had gained accreditation, according to an article in the Indian Country Today. Navajo Technical College focuses on educating the Navajo Nation. The online degree added at the Historically Black College and University in Virginia comes as online enrollment increases of 18 percent were estimated to have happened during 2010, an article in US News & World Report noted, citing information from the Eduventures market research firm.

With some universities offering new nursing programs such as these can accomplish more than simply filling any needs that are anticipated as far as registered nurses are concerned. With health care reform, these and other nursing degree programs might help fill needs in primary care that some have suggested. They might also help alleviate what some have called a nurse educator shortage and, as they add to the field, increase its diversity. But before jumping into just any program, students should research all of their options, i.e., nurse schools, to make sure they are choosing the programs that best fit their needs.
