Molten Glass
What is float glass????????

Wikipedia says: Float Glass is a sheet of glass made by floating molten glass on a bed of molten metal… does that mean that there’s liquid metal, and then you pour in molten glass and wait till it floats to the top? Like oil and water?
sorry about the many question marks :P but Yahoo Answers won’t let me post a question that is less than 20 characters -__-

Actually the molten glass is flowed in from one end and is spread out to a thin sheet which is pushed/pulled down the length of a tank of molten tin under a gas blanket of nitrogen to keep the tin from oxidizing. The purpose is to produce a very smooth, very flat sheet of glass while it is cooling to the point that it can be lifted out and cut. Before float was developed, the glass had to be lifted in a wide band and bent over rollers just before it got hard and this produced distortion in the glass as it was straightened out, annealed, and cut. If you visit a house, like mine, that was built before about 1960, you can see the small ripples in the visual image through the glass. Float glass eliminates that.
