Unique Star of David Pendants
Star of David pendants are a popular form of Jewish jewelry today. These pendants bear the ancient symbol which is probably most associated with Judaism during the past few centuries. What makes this symbol so fascinating?
The Star of David has many meanings, some historical and some mystical. Although there are no actual historical recordings of King David or his warriors using this symbol in any way, some believe that they in fact did use them in some way or another, mostly because of its mystical powers of protection. In addition, the Bar Cochvah warriors used this shape nearly 2,000 years ago.
The shields they used were strengthened by these two interlocked triangles set behind the shield. The Star of David pendants are common also because of their spiritual meaning. The Kabala states many explanations as to the uniqueness of this symbol.
First, the two triangles stand for the two opposing forces in this world – good vs. bad, physical vs. spiritual, earth vs. heaven and so on. Second, each triangle has three points, representing the eternal bond between the people of Israel, the land of Israel and the Torah of Israel. Third, this special shape has a hexagonal center, with six small triangles. While the center represents G-d, the six triangles stand for the six directions of this world which He rules – north, south, east, west, up and down, stating that He rules all.
Finally, this fantastic symbol shows the special intertwined relationship between man and G-d. All of man’s actions in this world (the triangle pointing up) go to the heavens and in response, an abundance of good flows down from G-d to him (the triangle pointing down).
Today, the Star of David can be seen in many places other than jewelry. Perhaps the most obvious place is on the flag of the state of Israel, which features a blue Star of David in the center and two blue stripes, one at the top and on eat the bottom, representing the stripes of the Tallit. Also, many synagogues, particularly in communities outside of Israel, are adorned with this symbol, either on the outside wall or above the ark. Furthermore, the Israeli emergency system is called the “Magen David Adom” – meaning the red Star of David.
