Was Bhutan a part of Tibet long ago?
Bhutan has a culture very similar to the Tibetans. Their religion is Tibetan Buddhism or Lamaism. Their language, Dzongkha, is also similar to Tibetan and is written with the Tibetan script. Was Bhutan a part of Tibet before it became a country?
No Bhutan was not the part of Tibet. Until 17th century Bhutan existed as a patchwork of minor warring fiefdoms. The area was unified by the Tibetan lama and military leader Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal who fled religious persecution in Tibet.

The reason that you see the similarities in language is because it borders Tibet and there have been long cultural and religious exchanges between the two countries.
And its not just the two countries that share similarities between the scripts, their are a host of other languages that share similar scripts. It’s because they originate from a single family of Brahmic scripts

Obviously if two nations are close enough they will exercise considerable influence on each other. And in case of Bhutan there were lot of similarities. Bhutan which existed as warring fiefdoms was united by a Tibetan Lama. They had a common boundary. It was Buddhist Monks who introduced the particular script to Tibet, because most of ancient Buddhist scriptures were written in a similar script. Also these Lamas many a time traveled through Bhutan.
