Do you think mythical creatures existed in reality at one point or were they always a figment of imagination?
I’ve always thought that they were real and tangible while people believed they existed and then when the religious folk came around telling people what to believe then the creatures went into hiding because no one believed in them anymore. Perhaps this is why only kids can see them because they haven’t been jaded yet?
Those creatures are both a product of vivid imaginations and of nature. Sadly, the reality of two-headed calves and profoundly deformed human infants has been documented throughout history and still occurs today. Two-headed calves – two-headed garter snakes – a little boy with but two fingers on each hand and two toes on each foot, looking like grotesque claws instead of functional extremities – people born with four legs or with extra hands or born Siamese twins – you’ve heard of all these and possibly seen some of them. Therein lie some of the inspiration for the creatures you’re thinking of. And it’s almost natural for men to begin to embellish the idea of such creature with tales of even more grotesque attributes, such as the ability to fly, being able to live only on human blood, being able to shift from human shape to that of a bat or a dog… In one sense it is understandable and even, done with tongue firmly in cheek, it can be funny. On the other hand, history suggests that those whose ill fortune it was to be these deformed specimens were often treated brutally, even by those we’d have expected to protect and care for them.
Hallowe’en, when we all think of those grotesque critters like werewolves and vampires, gargoyles and jack-o-lanterns, has it’s fun side, but don’t pretend it hasn’t a seriously evil history as well.
