Macrame Mania – Age-Old Art of Knot Tying Is Back With A High Fashion Twist

Macrame is the ancient art of tying knots. Dating back to the thirteenth century, this is a craft for the ages. Arab weavers are thought to have created this art form. Macrame spread to Spain and Europe via trade routes. Spending long months at sea, Sailors used this craft as a way to pass time. They soon found that their artwork was a great way to barter on land for essentials. And so the spread of macrame continued, and the art flourished.

During Victorian times, macrame’s popularity peaked. Macrame lace was all the rage, and could be found on curtains, women’s sleeves, dress hems, pillowcases and anywhere else that could use a little lacy embellishment.

Macrame slowly died down in popularity, and fell out of favor as all fads eventually do. Sometimes fads disappear completely, never to return. The art of knot tying, however, keeps coming back to life.

In the seventies, the craze hit again. During that decade it was hard to find a home without a macrame plant hanger or owl gracing its walls. The craft centered more around textiles and furnishings this time around. Some of the more popular items produced at this time were macrame hammocks, chairs and decorative accessories.

During the eighties macrame was no longer popular. This wasn’t to last, however. Grunge was born in the nineties. The craft made a comeback through the birth of hemp jewelry. Necklaces and macrame bracelets were seen at craft fairs. The knotted art form was the perfect complement to the earthy, natural look that became popular.

Fast forward to present day and we find ourselves in the midst of yet another revival of this classic art form. Last year it started creeping into the world of high fashion. Subtle at first, we are now seeing macrame pieces in the Spring and Summer 2010 collections. Who would have guessed that you’d find several gorgeous macrame dresses in Dianne Von Furstenberg’s Spring 2010 collection, a well known fashion designer.

This craft is sure to become popular with crafters again as it trickles down from the world of high fashion. Get out your macrame cord and start knotting!
