im so confused about knitting a rib!?

i know how to make a rib while knitting, but it never comes out right for me!
ok im folowing a pattern in a book for knitting legwarmers:
cast on 34 stitches (i did that just fine)
knit a 2-stitch rib as follows:
Row 1: K2 *P2, K2 rep from * to end.
Row 2: P2, *K2, P2 rep from * to end.
continue untill work mesures 12in.

im on row 1, i knit two, then i TRY to pur; two, but i allways end up with an extra loop, like, ok, i knited two stitches, so there are two loops on my right hand needle and then i go to purl a stitch and i end up with 2 loops from that 1 stitch so there are now 4 loops on my right hand needle when there should be only 3 so far.
what am i doing wrong?
i have watched the videos on knittinghelp.com and i am doing the same thing she’s doing in the videos! i dont know why this is hapening!

Ha, don’t worry this is such a common mistake! When you knit, your yarn in in the BACK of the work, so when you have knit 2, you need to then bring the yarn to the FRONT – Just pick it up and place it between your needles so it is now hanging between you and your work. Now you can purl your next 2. Remember once you have completed the purl stitches, to then place the yarn to the Back of your work for knitting. What you are inadvertantly doing is a yarn over – a method of increasing the number of stitches. But now you’ll know how if your pattern ever calls for it!
