What is Engraved Stationery?
Engraved stationery is letterheads or headed paper that has a logo, image or another element imprinted into it. This element is imprinted onto the paper such that it stands out. This is very similar to embossing, but the image is normally hand engraved onto a steel die or printing plate. The impression in the paper is usually visible both back and front of the paper stock used.
Some designs use copper etching to produce the printing plate using acid to create the image. This is an intaglio process, where the design is etched into the plate rather than being raised. In this technique the copper plate is covered by a ground, a kind of wax, which is scraped away in the design you want. The exposed areas are then eaten into by the acid bath, to create the design. Because the design is created by hand, this is considered an artisan, luxury product.
Once you have your engraved plate or die, via whatever method, the image is then stamped onto the paper. If you want a colour image, then a single colour of ink is applied to the plate, where it runs into the engraved lines, then the plate and paper are brought together under very high pressure. For an uncoloured image, the die and paper are pressed in the same way, but no ink is applied to the surface. The pressure applied can be about 2 tonnes per square inch, so it is not an inconsiderable amount.
Engraved stationery is used when you want to project an image of authority, luxury and often history. It is suitable for companies and also individuals who have their own personal stationery, particularly if they have a coat of arms or other family crest. Each one is bespoke and unique to you, and displays a sense of class.
Other paper or card items can be imprinted with your engraved image such as business cards, calling cards or invitations. Again, these give the recipient a sense of luxury and are a statement about the sender.
