Hand Catenary
How do you find Petrarca’s first food sonnet?

(to be spoken by the pheasants originally sent with this poem as a gift)

In those foothills where she, in Nature’s bower,
Took on that mortal garment that attends
The man, who you this catenary sends,
And wakes him weeping in the darksome hour,

We lived in liberty and peace, as our
And every animal’s desire tends,
Suspecting never life, which shaded wends,
Of stratuses above our way to lower.

But for the miserable estate the snathe
And hand have wrought on our fine life low lain,
Our only consolation comes of death,

Revenge, that he of such ungentle main
Heaves by another’s force, his mortal breath
Strung up, enfastened to a harder chain.

~Francesco Petrarca, Canzoniere 8
Edit: I think I should say `dying breath’ in line 13, ridiculous as Petrarca’s conceit is that he is dying of love.

It’s slightly morose and negative for my tastes.
