Pasteurella in a Rabbit…..?
I have a chinchilla rex who is an indoor rabbit, he is about 2 years old nearly now and has been diagnosed when i got him at 4 months old with pasteurella. This effects him severely – he is always seems to be sneezing/coughing and once this has finished there is a white discharge that comes out of his nose, sometimes with blood. He’s used to this so doesn’t seem to affect him too much but I worry about the ulcers he’s had – one in the folds of his neck grew to the size of a golfball and I took him to the vets on xmas eve last year – he stressed himself out so much on the table that he popped it and it had to be flushed out and then i spent all of xmas making sure i kept the wound open, flushing it and battling with him to inject oral medicine into his mouth (he weighs 7/8lbs and is a v strong rabbit!!)
Now I have noticed he has another wound underneath his chin, well his mouth really and bleeds a lot. I don’t know what to do as the trips to the vets are costing me a fortune!!….
The current wound will need to be examined by a vet and treated properly. It may or may not be related to Pasteurella, but either way it will require veterinary care.
Pasteurella multocida can be treated when there is an active infection but as yet there is no cure. Your rabbit will carry the bacterium for the rest of his life and it can cause a plethora of problems. At the worst he could even develop a head tilt from an inner ear infection and nerve damage from which he may never fully recover.
Many breeders cull infected rabbits to prevent the spread of the infection and some pet owners also opt for euthanasia.
If you choose to continue his care you can help reduce the number of active infections by increasing your husbandry standards. Change his cage frequently to eliminate ammonia, ensure fresh water is always available and provide him with a top notch diet of hay and a variety of fresh vegetables supplemented with fruits. The reality is no matter what he may continue to have outbreaks and each one will require a trip to the vet.
This is all information your vet should have provided you with after he diagnosed your rabbit with Pasteurella. Most small animal and exotics vets I know would have provided you with supportive care instructions and follow-up calls after a diagnosis like that. I’d suggest looking for a new vet who specializes in rabbits to help you through this as it seems like your current one isn’t a very good resource.
