So-called Reagan Republicans Contradict Their Idol
Ronald Reagan’s 100th birthday might have been Feb. 6. Reagan’s second term as president ended in 1989. Since that time his stature has only grown among the GOP. But Reagan’s actual record differs from how he is recalled by modern conservatives, who wouldn’t elect a politician who advocated the policies the Gipper did. And to think of how many personal loans people take out to support their parties.
Reagan recalled on his 100th birthday
On Ronald Reagan’s would-be 100th birthday, he remains a polarizing figure. To some he was responsible for winning the cold war and launching the idea of limited government. The gap between the rich and the poor was widened by him also with the federal deficit going overboard, which others remember him for. Reagan is considered to be a tax-cutting, budget-cutting man who defended ideals in The United States, if you ask Republicans. His name is conveniently used as a catch-phrase to validate tax cuts for the rich, deep cuts in government, aggressive military spending and hard-line immigration policies.
New Reagan taxation
The idea the deficit can be reduced without a tax increase isn’t necessarily something that 100 year old Reagan would agree with. Former Republican Senator from Wyoming Alan Simpson, co-chair of the president’s commission on deficit reduction, worked with Reagan on the federal budget during the Reagan administration. Simpson called the conservative assertion that Reagan did not raise taxation “plain damn lies.”. In a Congressional hearing, he pointed out that tax increases under Reagan included the 1982 Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act that elevated corporate taxation and income taxes by almost 1 percent of Gross Domestic Product, the largest peacetime tax increase ever at the time.
What Reagan believed about Republican ideas
Tax increases take place almost annually Reagan was president. Only one of the eight years did not see this increase. When it comes to spending, Reagan increased spending 177 percent while he was governor of California from 1967-1975. As president, he expanded government and tripled the federal deficit despite raising taxation. The Brady Bill gun-control measure was one Reagan supported. He also tried to get rid of nuclear weapons entirely. In 1986, millions of undocumented aliens were given amnesty by him rather than making it extremely hard for immigrants to get in. When analyzing Ronald Reagan, it could be noticed that he wasn’t anything like people believe. Reagan Republicans should really change their support to somebody else.
