National Palace Museum – An immersive display of ancient Chinese artwork and artefacts
Serving as the National Museum of the Republic of China, the National Palace Museum is home to an impressive array of exhibits. Located in Taiwan, the museum features a staggering 650,000 pieces of ancient Chinese artwork and artefacts which gives it the distinction of being one of the largest in the world.
The museum itself has a history in that the original museum was created inside Beijing’s Forbidden City, but to prevent their capture during a Japanese invasion many artefacts were relocated outside the city. Afterward during the resulting Chinese Civil War these precious artefacts were relocated to Taiwan.
Inside the museum there are several main categories that include Bronze, Jade, Paintings, Ceramics, Curios and Pottery in addition to Documents, Rare Books and Calligraphy. Throughout the museum, visitors will find an impressive collection of items under each category that will interest purveyors of art.
However there are certain items which stand out from the rest of the exhibits. The ‘One Hundred Horses’ is a painting that combines the painting styles of the west with Asian painting materials that truly presents an unusual piece of art in the end.
The Carved Olive Stone Boat is a miniature boat that features a painstaking level of detail. Looking closely onlookers will find moveable windows, a covered deck, while the interior features chairs, plates on a dining table as well as eight figures.
The Meat Shaped Stone creates a likeness of a pork piece that has been cooked with soy sauce using the materials of a form of agate and jasper.
