new zealand project help?
my class for social studies is doing a project for the polynesian triangle..
i chose new zealand
a lot of students in my class is doing poster board
i thought that i could be a little more creative and do something else..
i was thinking of making new zealand food for the class, but i don’t know what famous new zealand food there is..
or maybe i was thinking of carving a maori statue, but i don’t know how to do that either, haha.
unless i use clay or paper mache?
any suggestions?
xxthanks.
The first thing that comes to mind is ‘Hangi’. But I can’t imagine that working in this situation. Hangi is sort of like a Hawaiian luau. Essentially, they bury food in the ground and then dig it up later and eat it. Very tasty, but the excitement lies in the party, not in the food.
Most of the traditional foods are hard to get outside of NZ. You could do a project based on the diversity of food in NZ and then just serve one or two things as an example.
You could make ‘motumotus’ or ‘doughboys’. A sort of dumpling.
Pavlova – which may or may not have originated in NZ or Australia (depending on who you ask.)
Marmite sandwiches. Roast lamb. Baked kumara (sweet potato / kau kau). Mussels and abalone. Taro. Steamed leafy green vegetables.
You could always learn a traditional song or dance – perhaps the Haka? – and do a poster about it’s origin and current use, and give a demonstration?
