How to Shake the Winter Blues by Learning Wood Carving

Why do some folks dislike the winter time with such a hatred? Is it the snow, the cold, the slippery sidewalks, or is it something else they truly hate, and that is getting the winter blues because they always think there’s nothing to do. I have always loved the winter time, from when I was a kid to my present age, I don’t care much for the cost of the rising heat bill each year, but as far as the beauty of the winter scenery, I think it’s wonderful, truly a gift from God.

Have you ever been to a carnival or fair or some other event and seen them wood figures being made with a person wielding a chainsaw, usually they are bears or other such critters like an eagle. The person operating the chainsaw, swipes through the wood as if it’s butter, but soon turns the large piece of wood into a wonder to marvel at. How would you like to be able to do the same thing, only on a much smaller and safer scale? Will, you can if you start learning wood carving.

Again, let me state I am not talking about wood carving with a chainsaw, I am talking about starting out by carving a small block or piece of wood with a carving knife, then moving onto using carving chisels often called gouges. Wood carvers like different types of woods for different objects, some wood like walnut and chestnut is generally nice for most carving, but if you want a wood that holds up good for fine detailed work you may wish to try apple or pear. You should try different types of woods, to see which one works the best for you.

Once you like the wood and get comfortable using the carving knife, you should purchase a set of carving gouges, these tools let you make some very detailed scenes onto the wood. Like using any knife or sharp tools like the carving gouges, just be careful and use common sense. This winter season, don’t sit around feeling depressed with nothing to do, grab your wood and carving tools and have some great fun, while you shake the winter blues.

There is a website that describes numerous activities and other methods to help eliminate the Winter Blues, this website is called: Winter Activities – and it may be found at this url: http://www.winter-activities.com
