Carved Cow

The Best Of Wilton, Wiltshire

Wilton is the ancient capital of Wessex and only three miles to the west of Salisbury. Its history has roots in Anglo Saxon times and there are plenty of things to see and do around the area.

The rivers Wylye and Nadder meet at Wilton, and the surrounding countryside is beautiful. The life of these rural people inspired local author AG Street to write on the subject and his work includes Stawberry Roan – a novel about a cow. The book was later made into a film, released in 1945.

The main things to see in Wilton itself are Wilton House, Wilton Carpet Factory Museum and the Italianate church. The Pembroke Arms Hotel is ideally placed as a base to visit these places as it is only a few minutes walk from each and it is a lovely Salisbury hotel. There are other Salisbury hotels in the city centre, but the Pembroke Arms in Wilton makes sense if you are visiting these local attractions.

In 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, Wilton Abbey was surrendered to Henry VIII. In 1541 most of the estate was granted to Sir William Herbert, the Earl of Pembroke, who decided to commission Wilton House to be built on the land. The house has been added to over time and it is one of the nicest stately homes in the country, with a stunning Palladian bridge in the grounds. The house also contains staterooms by Inigo Jones, including the stunning Double Cube Room that is the finest 17th century stateroom in England still surviving.

The carpet industry began in Wilton in 1741, when the 9th Earl of Pembroke brought two French weavers to the town to train the locals. The Wilton Royal Carpet Factory was founded at the beginning of the century and it remained in business until 1995, when it closed temporarily, following a takeover. The factory has re-opened, but it had to lose the Wilton Royal part of its name. Next to the factory is the museum where you can find out all about carpet making in the local area.

The Italiante church is also known as the Church of St. Mary and St. Nicholas and was designed by Thomas Henry Wyatt and David Brandon. The exterior is inspired by a Roman basilica, and the interior contains lovely mosaics. The lions at the front doorposts are sculpted from stone originating from the Isle of Man. For the size of the town, the church is very large and it is definitely worth seeing.

Wilton is a great place to visit, ideally placed to see Salisbury city, Wardour castle in Tisbury, and the Fovant badges too. Steeped in history, come and see what made Wilton the ancient county capital and the royal seat of the kingdom of Wessex.
