Enter The Matrix

If you are going to enter the Matrix this Halloween, make sure you do so dressed in a Matrix costume that you can either make or buy. In a Matrix costume you can turn into Neo, Morpheus, Trinity, Agent Smith or even the ghostly looking albino Twins.

The Matrix Trilogy takes us on a journey that may sometimes make you incredulous, but, in fact, is very much based on myths and philosophy. The philosophy behind the Matrix films is very similar to Advaita Vedanta and to some Buddhist teachings. It informs us that what we perceive and think everyday is an illusion, Maya, that hides the truth of our real self which is Brahman: eternal, unchanging and infinite. The Matrix is like the Indian concept of Maya or illusion. We need to free our minds from Maya in order to realize the Truth.

Some of the philosophical ideas behind the Matrix are profound and possibly difficult to comprehend but well worth thinking about. However, the Matrix films are full of action and whether you comprehend fully the philosophical implications or not, it’s jolly good fun to watch, especially with Keanu Reeves as the Savior of the human race.

Keanu Reeves plays a character who leads two lives in the film, one as Neo the hacker and one as Thomas Anderson, a respectable computer programmer in a normal job. Neo has a sense that something is not right. He doesn’t know what but he has heard of the Matrix and wants to know what it is. When he meets Morpheus he’s given the opportunity to know what the Matrix is or to go back to his everyday life. The outfit that is associated with Neo is the long black trench coat with black sunglasses. In this outfit, you can see yourself as Neo and maybe practice some martial arts! This costume can then be paired with the Trinity costume, very dominatrix, with its sexy long black vinyl coat and black sunglasses. Or you may prefer the character of Morpheus, the captain of the Nebuchadnezzar. He also wears a long black coat and dark shades. He has black pants, black dress shirt and a lime green tie. If you’re more into villains, Agent Smith is the obvious choice or perhaps the Albino Twins.

If you want to read some more about the philosophical ideas behind the Matrix, you could try reading “The Matrix and Philosophy: Welcome to the Desert of the Real (Popular Culture and Philosophy)” edited by William Irwin. Or another one is “Like a Splinter in Your Mind: The Philosophy Behind the Matrix Trilogy” by Matt Lawrence.
