Rubber bracelets began as a punk rock anti-fashion, anti-establishment story in the late 1970′s – early 1980′s. Initially, black, rubber 0-rings were donned as bracelets. These kinds of bracelets represented the anti-jewelry sentiment, as rubber has no value in any way or status compared to precious metals such as gold, silver, and platinum.
These bracelets became quite popular in the 1980′s when worn by celebs in their videos and concerts. While called “rubber”, these weren’t actually crafted from rubber, but silicone. Although, this trend didn’t hang around long since real rubber will snap and adhere to the skin, it’s very uncomfortable, and breaks down rapidly from body oils and sweat.
Again, this craze had its problems, and faded into history. Another common bracelet craze was that of the Jelly Bracelets that came in numerous hues and became known as Sex Bracelets. The various colors, you might have suspected, portrayed a certain sex act that the individual was prepared to perform. An interested party would just need to contact the wearer, snap the band of his/her choosing, and he/she would get to be the person receiving that particular act.
Teens being what they are, invented the sex bracelet code breakdown and it was rapidly known amongst themselves and posted online what the different colors represented. There are assorted connotations and some kids made up their own, though it was understood what the person was promoting. Needless to say, it wasn’t a long time before sex bracelets were banished from the schools, but one can still go online and research the various colors and meanings.

One particular band could be made out of cutting slivers of old tire rubber using a sharp knife. Once finished, the strands can be woven or braided into whatever pattern preferred.
