Escaping Judge Not Questioned Further
After the conclusion of yet another tiring week, the principals in a huge cover up trial spend their various weekends very differently. The Jurors take a long bus ride; the lawyers return to work, and one individual goes back to prison. Read this site if you want victorian workcover information.
The United States District Judge rushes to get off his bench and out of the courtroom. He doesn?t want to endure any more questions from lawyers. The judge’s comments brought a smile to the defendant’s face. After literally hours of questions, he sat emotionless and without intonation answering questions. He is currently sitting in a detention center serving out a one to four year sentence. His charge? Obstruction of justice. The U.S. Marshals planned to return him there.
The judge tells the jury to have a good weekend and to relax. He also tells them to enjoy their bus ride. Sequestered in a motel for the duration of the trial, the jurors will be treated to a picnic or trip sometime during the weekend. But the district judge didn’t have any such well wishes for the attorneys, who continued to argue with each other and the judge even after repeated warnings to stop.

While the jury remained impassive, the defendant retold the same intensely detailed narrative of the cover up that he had testified to at the televised committee hearings. He did mis-state some of the dates. But it wasn’t the testimony that was spell binding. It was the contention among the judge and attorneys that captivated the audience. They were rewarded for their three hour wait.
One more big battle ensued after the jury and accused had left the room. It seems the government hadn?t let the lawyers know the name of the person who would follow the next witness. He didn?t have the name to provide, according to the Chief Prosecutor. He also reminded the court that the government had promised to give the names one day prior to their testimony. One argued he couldn’t see why they objected to giving the witness name, and stopping another silly argument.
And, again, the district attorney looked for a compromise. I would like the record to reflect that the approach of the prosecution in this case is being protested. We were made to wait for materials for many, many months. They don?t give us the witness names so that we are less effective during cross examination. We’ve given them enough pages of transcript to fill a library and they’ve given us a match cover’s worth. Laughter exploded in the courtroom when sighing, the district attorney commented that he’d thought they’d been getting along fairly well up until this point. At that point, the judge was standing, clearly ready to depart, stating that he is already overly burdened trying to keep the attorneys in check.
