Is the use of feathers animal-rights friendly?
Are birds harmed when their feathers are collected for use in crafts, pillows, etc? For example, peacock feather earrings, down feather pillows, and feathers sold for craft designs.
No, the use of feathers is NOT animal rights friendly at all.
YES birds are harmed as feathers are not ‘collected’ some are plucked or cut whilst the birds are alive, for others their carcasses are fed into plucking machines. Birds do molt some feathers (ie peacock feathers) however, if the bird is free ranging then these are difficult to collect and usually broken or too dirty to use. Or if the bird plucks them, to make nests, sometimes they are STOLEN by people to make profit.
Generally birds do not just molt unwanted feathers in large enough quantities for commercial purposes. In factory farming, molted feathers drop into the deep poo on the floor, and are then reclaimed and rendered to make other products This poultry litter was fed to other animals such as cattle before the mad cow disease outbreak. The feathers you buy may be the byproduct of factory farming then killing birds for their meat. Factory farmed animals have a miserable life. The feathers found in the wild are used by other species; collected to make nests. Don’t take them, you don’t need them to raise young as other animals do.
Using exotic feathers in the fashion industry such as ostrich or marabou are just as bad as the fur trade.”There’s no kind way to rip feathers from any animal,” insists Peta spokesperson Anita Singh. “Most birds have them painfully ripped off or cut out while they are still alive.” In response, it’s claimed by the fashion industry that the use of feathers is restricted to a limited number of birds and to those that are by-products of the meat industry or from farmed animals

‘Geese and Ducks Suffer for Down
Down is the soft layer of feathers closest to birds’ skin, primarily in the chest region. These feathers are highly valued because they do not have quills. Most products labelled “down” contain a combination of these under-feathers and other feathers or fillers. While most down and feathers are removed from birds during slaughter, geese from breeding flocks and those raised for meat and foie gras may be live-plucked. In countries where this cruel practise continues, up to 5 ounces of feathers and down are pulled from each bird every six weeks from the time that they are 10 weeks old until they are up to 4 years old.(1)
Plucking geese causes them considerable pain and distress. One study of chickens’ heart rates and behaviours determined that “feather removal is likely to be painful to the bird(s),” and another study found that the blood glucose level of some geese nearly doubled (a symptom of severe stress) during plucking.(2,3)
Eider ducks are a protected species, but their feathers are sought out for bedding and clothing. The females lay eggs and surround them with feathers plucked from their own breasts. Farmers in Iceland gather more than 6,500 pounds of Eider duck feathers each year.(4) By taking these feathers, farmers are removing important insulation that the eggs need to hatch. It takes feathers from at least 80 nests to fill just one comforter.(5)’
